2017 Book Challenge: 2nd Quarter Report
I read 13 books in the second quarter of this year. Adding that to the 28 books I read in the first quarter puts me at 41 books halfway through the year. So, I am a bit behind on my total 100 book goal for the year. I am not deterred, though! I am powering through more books now and will be back on track in no time.Of the 13 books I read this quarter, my four favorites were:The Identicals, by Elin Hilderbrand I loved the premise of this book: twin sisters who are opposites in every way but how they look and live on neighboring islands, never interacting. When their father's death brings them back together, the reunion does not go smoothly. The stories as they basically trade islands temporarily are funny and heartbreaking. This was a book I sailed through.The Girls, by Emma Cline This is a book that I initially resisted. It was popping up in all my feeds with rave reviews, but I generally dislike what I called "period pieces" -- those set during a specific time in history. Once I started reading it, I found it fascinating as it moved back and forth between modern time and the '60s as the central character reminisced about having once been part of a cult. The fact that it was about a cult should hook you immediately.Magpie Murders, by Anthony Horowitz This was fun Sherlock Holmes-like story, complete with the British accent (I listened to this one on Audible: Try Audible and Get Two Free Audiobooks
Dangerous Minds, by Janet Evanovich I just can't seem to pass up a book by Evanovich. They are quick, silly and good for a laugh. Great for reading on an airplane.
Camino Island, by John Grisham I didn't love this Grisham book as much as I have loved his others, but it is a good audio book for a long drive to North Carolina this summer.
The Bat, by Jo Nesbo Nesbo's Harry Hole series came highly recommended from a fellow mystery novel friend, but I just did not like this first one in the series. It is translated from its original Norwegian, so some of the stumbles in writing that I sensed could be from that. I am going to give the second Harry Hole book a try before giving up on the series all together.
16th Seduction, by James Patterson This is the latest in Patterson's Women's Murder Club series. It was fine, but not as good as some of the early books in the series.
The last five are all part of Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series, which I got into once Amazon started producing a TV series based on the novels. I listened to all of these as audio books and find them good for drama that you can plug into anytime.

I read on my Kindle, on the Kindle app on my iPhone and iPad, listen to books on Audible and just recently subscribed to the Book of the Month Club. As a result, I typically have several books going at once -- digital, audio and physical. I prefer reading on my Kindle because it is comfortable to hold, lightweight and easy on my eyes.
